Landforce Crew Members start with eight weeks of paid training and earn seven industry-recognized certifications. Then they keep building skills in paid transitional employment, with career coaching the whole way.

Step 1: Join the waitlist
Tell us you’re interested. We contact people on the waitlist when applications open for the next crew.
Step 2: Paid training
Eight weeks of paid training, ending with seven industry-recognized certifications and real technical and work-readiness skills.
Step 3: Paid transitional employment
Keep learning on the job with a Land Stewardship crew or at The Mill, with coaching and quick feedback along the way.
Step 4: Your next job
Build an Individualized Employment Plan with our Workforce Development team, and get help connecting with employers.
The work
Work you can point to.
A Landforce crew is six Crew Members and one crew leader. Crews work in parks, green spaces and neighborhoods across Allegheny County, mostly from May through November.
It’s hands-on, outdoor work. It’s hard, and it’s rewarding: at the end of each project you can see the difference you made for the people who live nearby.
- Building and maintaining trails
- Restoring habitat, removing invasive plants, and planting and caring for trees
- Keeping rain gardens and green stormwater infrastructure working
- Improving vacant lots, gardens and play spaces
- Milling and drying lumber from fallen urban trees at The Mill
Support
Coaching that doesn’t stop at a certificate.
People bring their whole selves to work. Career coaching, support and quick feedback continue through training and employment.
With our Workforce Development team you’ll set long-term goals, map the steps to get there, and work on your resume, job search and interview skills. Before you leave Landforce, we help you connect with what comes next.

What to expect
What the job asks of you.
Crew work is physical, and it happens outdoors in every kind of weather. If you have questions about any of this, call us at 412-727-6936. We’re glad to talk it through.
- Walking on uneven, steep ground and unpaved trails, sometimes 1 to 3 miles to reach a worksite
- Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, and bending, kneeling, climbing and crawling
- Working outside in heat, cold, rain and direct sun, with dust and pollen
- Getting yourself to and from each worksite, unless we tell you otherwise
- An occasional evening or weekend for a special event or deadline
